The Octad identified the clear advantages to building field agents themselves rather than relying solely on recruitment efforts. The true breakthrough came when an experiment that Albreckt, Epiphany, and Vivienne were working on failed spectacularly. When the yellow goo and horrid smell were cleaned out of the workshop, a floating crystal with a slight vibration was found. After additional testing, the Octad named this crystal a resonance crystal, based on the oddly empathic characteristics it displayed when tuned appropriately.

Using these crystals as a power source, the Octad were able to create constructs made of these crystals capable of understanding and enhancing the abilities of others. The crystals provide some of the traits of humanoids, both strengths and weaknesses.
